I’ve been doing this feature for a while now, and have hit most of the major characters. There are some, though, that you may legitimately expect to see here that I’m just not going to use, because I don’t consider them superheroes. For whatever reason. Here are the ones I can think of right now.
The Incredible Hulk, to me, is not a superhero. He’s a monster. He doesn’t want to be a superhero and he doesn’t act like one. It’s true that his stories tend to be within the superhero genre, but that’s not enough.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a hero, and actually fits the superhero description pretty well, but the thing with her is that her stories are not superhero stories. They’re horror stories, more or less. She’s a horror hero.
Catwoman, and also Max Damage (and Jailbait and Headcase) are reformed supervillains. There are some reformed supervillains who actually are superheroes, like Blok, the White Witch, Hawkeye, and the Scarlet Witch. But Catwoman and Max Damage struggle with their reformed status in a way that these others don’t, and are actually all the more interesting for it. Doesn’t make them superheroes, though.
